Maintaining Tires

Kelly writes: I have been reading your column for years and it seems that you constantly talk about tires. Is maintaining the tires that important? What about the brakes?

Mike:
Kelly, of course other things are important. However, no matter how good your brakes and suspension are, the only contact with the pavement is through your tires. Old tires with, hard, and cracked rubber won’t have the grip needed to stop the vehicle even if the brakes stop the wheels. If your tires have a problem, you have a BIG problem.
